What to Watch on Halloween Night

Halloween night is the one evening of the year with a genuinely awkward viewing problem. The audience changes three times between six o'clock and midnight, and a film that works for one slot is completely wrong for the next.

So rather than another ranked list, here's a plan for the actual shape of the night.

Early Evening, With Kids Around

Before the trick-or-treating winds down you need something spooky rather than scary. The Nightmare Before Christmas is the safest possible pick and holds up for adults. Hocus Pocus is very silly and completely non-threatening. The Addams Family is funnier than you remember.

Coraline is the one to reach for if the kids are slightly older and you want something with real atmosphere — it's genuinely unsettling, in a way that a lot of children find thrilling rather than upsetting.

The Party Slot

Between eight and ten, with people talking over it, you want a film nobody needs to follow closely. Shaun of the Dead is ideal — funny throughout, and it doesn't matter if you miss a scene getting the door. Beetlejuice works on the same principle.

Scream is the best choice if the room actually wants horror: it's frightening, but it's also constantly winking, so it never kills the mood. The original Halloween is the purist's pick and its tension survives a noisy room surprisingly well.

Late Night, Lights Off

Once it's down to the people who genuinely want this, you can commit. The Exorcist is still the heavyweight. Hereditary is the modern equivalent and considerably more upsetting. Sinister and The Conjuring are the most efficiently frightening mainstream films of the last fifteen years.

One rule for this slot: pick something at least one person in the room hasn't seen. Watching someone else's first time is half the appeal.

The Comedown

Don't go to bed on Hereditary. What We Do in the Shadows or Young Frankenstein will reset your nervous system in about twenty minutes, and both are good enough to not feel like a waste of the last slot of the night.

Plan It in Advance

The one thing that ruins Halloween night is spending forty minutes of it scrolling. Build the whole running order in a shared watchlist on Nuets beforehand and let everyone add their pick.
