The Scariest Movies on Netflix Right Now

Netflix horror has a reputation problem. The service puts out a lot of it, the thumbnails all look identical, and a decent share of it is filler. But the good stuff on there is genuinely good — it's just buried under everything else.

It's October, so here's where to actually start.

The Best of the Netflix Originals

His House is the standout: a haunted house film about a refugee couple resettled in England, where the horror and the grief are the same thing. It's tight, humane, and much better than its profile suggests.

The Ritual takes four men into a Swedish forest and delivers one of the best creature designs in modern horror. Gerald's Game turns an unfilmable Stephen King premise into a genuinely tense single-room thriller. Cam is a small, sharp film about identity theft in a way no other horror film has attempted.

The Series Worth the Commitment

Mike Flanagan's run on Netflix is the strongest body of horror work the service has. The Haunting of Hill House is the famous one and the sixth episode is a technical marvel. The Haunting of Bly Manor is slower and sadder — more gothic romance than horror. Midnight Mass is the best of the three if you have patience for long monologues about faith, which is a real condition of entry.

Cabinet of Curiosities is an anthology, so it's uneven by design, but the high points are excellent and each episode stands alone.

For a Group

The Fear Street trilogy is built for watching with other people — three films released across three weeks, each in a different era, all knowingly playing with slasher conventions. It's fun rather than frightening, which is often what a Friday actually needs.

Blood Red Sky is vampires on a hijacked plane and commits to that premise completely.

A Note on Catalogues

Streaming rights move constantly. Netflix originals stay put, but licensed horror rotates in and out every month, so anything on a list like this that isn't a Netflix production may have moved on. The Netflix page shows what's actually streaming right now rather than what was there when an article was written.
