The Best A24 Movies, Ranked
No distributor has ever had a decade like A24's. It went from a small independent outfit to a brand that people follow the way they follow directors — to the point where "an A24 film" is a genre description that everyone understands, even if nobody can define it precisely.
The catalogue is deep enough now to be intimidating. Here's how it breaks down.
The Two Best Picture Winners
Moonlight is the better film and the more delicate one — three chapters in one man's life, told with enormous restraint. Everything Everywhere All at Once is the opposite approach entirely: maximalist, chaotic, and somehow a very sincere family drama underneath the multiverse.
That a single distributor delivered both inside six years is the whole story of A24 in one fact.
The Horror Run
Hereditary is the one that reset expectations for what studio-adjacent horror could be, and its final twenty minutes are still hard to watch. Midsommar is a breakup film in daylight. The Witch is the most formally disciplined of the three — period-accurate dialogue, almost no score, unbearable tension.
Talk to Me proved the run wasn't finished, and Under the Skin remains the strangest thing on the list.
The Quiet Ones
This is where A24's real strength sits. Past Lives is about the version of your life you didn't live, and it's close to perfect. Aftersun is a film about a father and daughter on holiday that lands like an anvil once you understand what you've been watching. Minari and Lady Bird are both generous, specific family stories.
Eighth Grade captures adolescence more accurately than any film in years, which makes it genuinely difficult viewing for some people.
The Stress Tests
Uncut Gems is two hours of sustained panic attack with a great Adam Sandler performance at the centre. Good Time operates at the same pitch. The Lighthouse is two men going mad in black and white and 1.19:1.
None of these are relaxing. All of them are worth it.
The Recent Peak
The Zone of Interest is a Holocaust film shot almost entirely as domestic banality, with a sound design that does the work the images refuse to. It's the most formally daring thing the company has released and probably its most important.
Where to Begin
Past Lives if you want to be moved. Everything Everywhere All at Once if you want to be entertained. Hereditary if it's October and you're feeling brave. The Zone of Interest if you want to understand why people take this catalogue seriously.
Work Through the Catalogue
A24's output is well suited to a watchlist — it's a finite, curated body of work rather than an endless feed. Save what you haven't seen in Nuets and tick them off. Our drama page and horror page cover much of the same ground.
